I researched through archeological sites to find designs for plates. I had just built my own slab roller from an internet design with all materials sourced from the local Bunnings hardware supplier. I cut plaster moulds using a crude vertical lathe technique. These designs were based on shards found across Europe, mainly ancient rubbish tips and wells. Earthenware was the clay due to access to a rudimentary kilns from a local school. Layered glazes created unique designs but earthenware was not strong enough.. A refurbished kiln that would fire to stoneware became available and Midfire clays provided a durable and stronger medium. I continued to fire large earthenware platters as I had accumulated many glazes to fire at low temperatures
